MONTECATINI ALTO – THE CLOCK TOWER

It is one of six towers remain existing in medieval and prior to the twenty-five country's destruction at the hands of the Florentine troops of the Grand Duke Cosimo de' Medici which took place following the siege of 1554. It is a structure, which ran a feature exclusively military, located in a dominant position towards the plain. This tower was the defensive kingpin said "New Castle" as opposed to that existing on another Hill in the North of the country. The battlements were built in the post-medieval. From 1552 documents show that on the north side of the Tower, so as to be visible to the entire country, was, as even now, a clock. Rebuilt in 1695 is still kept in the Tower, with a few additions made to power throughout the 20th century, in an attempt to modernize the operation. In 1732 the municipal authorities decided to add an external dial to the clock. In 1843 it was decided to replace the ring with a new one called "alla romana", meaning "ancient system to beat 6 hours in 6". Marble dial with Roman numerals 6, indicated by a blue form-fitting sheet is affixed in 1844. On 12th April 2016, thanks to the contribution of the Association Pro Loco of Montecatini Alto and the town of Montecatini Terme, have been restored the functioning of the antique clock. Possibility to make visits with reservation on Friday-Saturday-Sunday from 10.30am to 12am and from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. For information: Info@montecatini-alto.it
